Surprising Things You Can Find At Libraries In Massachusetts
September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month!
September is National Library Card Sign-Up Month, and what better way to celebrate than with some of the neat experiences and interesting things that a local library card can grant you?
Here in Southeastern Massachusetts, we have access to the Old Colony Library Network which enables our local libraries to have additional resources and benefits for our communities to share. The Old Colony Library Network is a cooperative that was founded in 1984 and consists of 28 member libraries. OCLN is a 501(c)3 tax-exempt nonprofit corporation that provides member libraries with affordable access to a range of services.

6) Free & discounted museum passes
Many of our local libraries offer free or discounted passes to museums and other attractions, giving you access to local experiences without breaking the bank. With your library card, you can borrow passes that discount tickets to places like the New England Aquarium, and the Plimoth Plantation. Be sure to swing by your local library and ask what passes are available for you to use!
5) Video games and video game systems and consoles
Gaming enthusiasts, rejoice! Our local libraries offer a variety of video games and gaming systems for loan. The best part? Even if your library doesn't have the exact title you're looking for, thanks to the Old Colony Library Network's sharing system, you can borrow one from another library without ever leaving your own. Whether you're looking to try out a new game or just want to borrow a console for a weekend, your library card can help.
4) Gardening tools, and household tools (such as a powerwasher!)
Need a pressure washer for a weekend project? Check out the Plymouth Public Library! Looking to do some gardening but don't have the right tools? Swing by the Kingston Public Library! Many local libraries offer a "library of things" where you can borrow tools and equipment for all sorts of projects.
3) Sports equipment
Have you ever wanted to try pickleball, but not enough to invest in a paddle yourself? Be sure to put a Pickleball Kit on hold at the Duxbury Free Library! Perhaps you're looking to play volleyball at an upcoming family game night? Swing by the Plymouth Public Library and check out the badminton/volleyball set. Whatever the reason, local libraries often offer sports equipment in their library of things.
2) Technology- laptops, cameras, tablets, ect.
From laptops to cameras to e-readers, many local libraries offer a variety of technology for loan. This can be especially helpful if you need a device for a short period of time or want to try out a new gadget before making a purchase. For example, if you're looking to host a family movie night under the stars, swing by the Brockton Public Library and check out the 20' Kohmo inflatable screen!
1) Expert help and resources
Libraries are more than just places to borrow books and materials. They also offer a wealth of resources and expertise, from research assistance to technology training. Many libraries also offer author talks, classes, book clubs, and other community events to help you learn new skills and meet new people.
So, the next time you're looking for something new to try or need a tool for a weekend project, don't overlook your local library. With so many surprising things to discover, you're sure to find something that sparks your interest. Happy exploring!
