Popular Massachusetts Polar Plunge Returns For 120th Year
This upcoming plunge marks another chapter in a tradition that began in 1905.
According to an announcement from the L Street Tavern in South Boston, the historic L Street Brownies New Year's Day Polar Plunge tradition is set to continue into 2025. The event, which draws many brave swimmers each year, will kick off early morning on January 1st, with the L Street Tavern opening its doors at 8 AM.
The celebration will feature a ceremonial march at 10 AM, led by the Greater Boston Firefighters Pipes and Drums, proceeding from the L Street Tavern to M Street Beach where participants will take their traditional plunge into the frigid waters. The L Street Brownies will be offering commemorative long-sleeve shirts from 9 AM to 1 PM, with proceeds supporting various neighborhood organizations.
This upcoming plunge marks another chapter in a tradition that began in 1905. The L Street Brownies, which according to the club was founded in 1865, have maintained this New Year's Day ritual for over a century, making it one of the oldest organized winter swimming events in the United States. The club's name originates from the deep tans its early members developed from their year-round swimming practices.
