What Is A Herring Run?
According to the North and South Rivers Watershed Association (NSRWA), a Herring Run is the annual upstream migration that river herring make each year when it is time for them to spawn in the ponds and streams they were originally born in. In the past, these "historically large" migrations of fish were incredibly significant to Native Americans and eventually the colonists as both food sources and fertilizer. However, due to multiple reasons such as damming, the Herring population has sharply declined in recent years.
Groups such as the NSRWA are working to restore Herring habitats by removing dams, but YOU can help too by learning more and never attempting to catch or remove a Herring from their habitat.
