The fascinating phenomenon of migrating herring will have to wait just one more day as Mother Nature has her own plans for Plymouth this weekend! Due to forecasted rain on Saturday, April 26th, the Plymouth Herring Festival has been rescheduled to Sunday, April 27th, 2025. The event will still run from 10 am to 3 pm at the Plimoth Grist Mill and along Jenney Pond Park, with previously planned activities remaining unchanged. This annual event marks the remarkable migration of thousands of alewife herring as they make their determined journey from the Atlantic Ocean through Plymouth Harbor and up the Town Brook to reach their spawning grounds at Billington Sea.
Festival attendees can look forward to a variety of family-friendly activities throughout the day. The Plymouth Herring Festival will feature interactive experiences such as herring counting demonstrations, creative alewife art projects, engaging games, and live musical performances. Additionally, visitors will have the valuable opportunity to interact with local scientists and contribute to ongoing herring research, making this not just a celebration but also an important citizen science initiative.
Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a family looking for an educational outing, or simply curious about this unique phenomenon, the festival promises an engaging and memorable experience for all ages.
