Get ready for a fun and educational way to cool off!
Get ready for a fun and educational way to cool off! Families in the Southeastern Massachusetts area have an exciting opportunity to explore local history for free next weekend! The Old Colony History Museum in Taunton is hosting its monthly Free Family Day on Saturday, July 26th, from 10 AM to 4 PM, thanks to the generous support of First Citizens Federal Credit Union. Families can take advantage of a complimentary 30-minute guided highlight tour at noon, followed by an interactive family activity at 2 PM. No advance registration is required for these special programs, making it easy for families to drop in and participate.
The Old Colony History Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into our region's history. The museum is named after the area historically known as the Old Colony, which they explain encompasses what is now Plymouth, Bristol, and Barnstable counties. This region has a rich history dating back at least 10,000 years before European settlement in 1620. The Old Colony History Museum states that its collections include significant New England decorative arts, textiles, militaria, and silver. "Our object collection contains more than 13,000 unique items," explains the museum on their website.
Currently, in addition to the permanent exhibits, visitors can explore two engaging exhibitions: "Reed & Barton: Building the Silver City," which commemorates the legacy of Taunton's largest silver company, and "The Power of Perspective: Object Stories from Every Angle," an interactive exhibition that examines historical objects through different storytelling lenses.
Visiting the Old Colony History Museum is a great way to introduce the younger members of your family to our community's rich history, while giving them tangible objects and art to see to connect them to our region's past. Thanks to the monthly Free Family Day, families can foster a love of local history in an accessible and affordable way. For those interested, mark your calendars for Saturday, July 26th, and take advantage of this enriching opportunity to connect with the past at no cost.
