“A Horrifyingly Good Time”: Hingham Bookstore Welcomes Local Horror Author Brennan LaFaro
In the store’s words, it is set to be “a horrifyingly good time.”
Barnes & Noble in Hingham, Massachusetts, has announced it will welcome local horror author Brennan LaFaro on March 21st at 6 PM for a discussion of the writer’s latest book, The Denizens, inviting readers to join what the store calls “a horrifyingly good time.” The event is set to bring LaFaro to the South Shore for an evening of conversation about the new release and the stories that have helped establish the Massachusetts-based author in contemporary horror.
According to Barnes & Noble’s description, The Denizens follows Sam Everett, who arrives in the small southern town of Maylene’s Hollow after the sudden death of his wife, only to discover that the tight-knit community is surrounded by a living cemetery and “won’t allow its dead to rest.” With the help of a mysterious widow, the town’s seemingly magical matriarch, and an ornery giant, Sam must confront the “denizens of the woods” and learn to let go of the dead in order to truly live.
LaFaro, who writes while balancing a day job in education, describes a life rooted in the region. “Brennan LaFaro is a music teacher by day, horror writer by night, living in southeastern Massachusetts with his wife, two sons, and his hounds,” the author biography on the writer’s website states.
That background has coincided with a steady run of publications in recent years. According to his website, LaFaro’s debut novella Slattery Falls first arrived in July 2021, and the story later returned in a revised edition after a brief period out of print. The series continued with Decimated Dreams in late 2022, followed by The World You Loved in June 2023, with a trade paperback edition released in June 2024.
Beyond the haunted-house subgenre, LaFaro has explored other corners of horror, including a western-tinged saga set in the supernatural. The author’s website notes that Noose and The Demon of Devil’s Cavern launched the Buzzard’s Edge Saga, “a horror western series with tinges of the supernatural, that follows a man and his mute adopted daughter and their adventures in a cursed Arizona town.” Where the Daybreak Ends: Stories From Buzzard’s Edge was then published in December 2024. LaFaro’s website also highlights Last Stay as “a supernatural slasher novella,” as well as short fiction collected in Illusions of Isolation and featured in multiple anthologies.
For local horror readers, the March 21st appearance offers a chance to hear directly from a Massachusetts-based writer about the work behind The Denizens and to connect with the wider community. In the store’s words, it is set to be “a horrifyingly good time.” For the most up-to-date information from Barnes & Noble in Hingham, Massachusetts, visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/bnhingham.
